SOY WAX

All You Wanted to Know And More about SOY Candles

Why soy candles?

Clean Burning – Soy candles are non-toxic and burn clean as opposed to paraffin candles. They don’t produce carbon soot which is toxic and can blacken your walls and ceilings as well as pollute the air around you.

Biodegradable – Soy candles are made from Soy beans, which is a renewable resource that is sustainable and non-damaging to our environment and therefore is naturally biodegradable. Soy wax can also easily be cleaned up when spilled with some hot soapy water and a damp cloth.

Long Burning – Soy candles burn at a lower temperature and burn slower than paraffin wax. A soy candle can burn around 30% – 50% longer than a traditional paraffin candle. They also burn completely when burned properly so there is no wax wastage.

Environmentally Friendly – Paraffin wax contains petroleum products that create air pollution and contribute to global warming. Soy candles are all natural and therefore healthy for our own environment at home as well as the larger one we all share.

What is a soy candle?

Our candles are hand made with 100% soy wax. We pride our candles on being all-natural and biodegradable. Our candles are natural in colour with no artificial dyes or additives added. We use natural wicks which are zinc and lead free. We then combine the wicks our natural soy wax which is then mixed with high quality fragrance oils to give a lovely clean, long burning candle.

Why does my soy candle look frosty?

Frosting, which is also referred to as the “bloom” is a crystal growth of the vegetable oils and is a natural characteristic of soy. It is a way a customer can tell their candles are made with 100% pure soy. Frosting can be stopped by adding additives to the candle but as we pride ourselves in creating a 100% natural and eco-friendly candle we do not use any additives and consider the frosting part of the soy experience. Frosting does not affect the performance of your candle in anyway, it just adds character to your all natural candle.

How long should I burn my candle?

Soy candles have a memory and therefore should achieve a full melt pool on their very first burn. A full melt pool will increase the life of your candle and the scent throw. A full melt pool is where you burn the candle until the top layer is melted fully to the sides of the container. Not creating a full melt pool the first time you burn candle can cause tunneling; this is where wax residue is left behind at the edges of the candle and can affect your scent throw. All future burns will only burn as wide as your first burn/ melt pool, therefore allowing your candle to create a full melt pool on its first burn is very important to get the most out of your candle. Any future burns should ideally also be given time to achieve a full melt pool and should be burned for no longer than 4 hours to get the maximum benefit from your candle.

Why do I need to keep my wick trimmed?

The wick of the candle should always be trimmed to 1/4″ high. This will stop your candle from smoking, creating soot or burning too fast. Always trim your wick before you light your candle, while the wax is hard and dry, not right after or during your candle burning. This will reduce any wick trimmings falling in your melt pool. When wick trimmings fall in your melt pool they will sink to the bottom of your candle, this can cause soot to appear and more importantly can cause a fire hazard. This concern can be eliminated by ensuring your wick is trimmed to 1/4″ each time.

What is the black mushroom at the top of my wick?

A mushroom at the top of your wick is a build up of carbon. It occurs when the wick is too long and needs to be trimmed.

Where should I burn my candles?

Candles must be burned away from drafts and on a stable heat resistant surface. They should be stored in a dry place away from direct and indirect sunlight. As soy soy candles have a lower burning temperature storing them in full sunlight might melt the candle and create discolouration.

Why does my candle look sweaty?

Soy sweat, which is excess oil of the soy wax, can present itself when there are extreme changes in temperature. This usually occurs during shipping in hot weather or if the candle is placed close to a heat source. This does not affect the burning of the candle in any way and usually disappears after the first burn. To remove the excess oil simply use a paper towel to remove the excess oil.

Do soy candles create soot?

Soy wax does not produce soot if cared for properly. However if you do not keep your wick trimmed as instructed they will begin to smoke and can create minimal black soot on the glass container. Hence the importance of following the candle instructions that come with each candle.

Why is there a wet spot on the soy candle jar?

This is where the soy wax has adhered to the jar. This is completely normal and is generally caused by an extreme change in temperature causing expansion and contraction of the soy wax, This does not affect the quality of your candle in any way.
